Late Surge Unable to Pull Women's Basketball Past William Paterson

WAYNE, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's basketball squad suffered an 81-65 loss to William Paterson University on Wednesday evening.

Rutgers-Newark (2-9, 1-5) shot 40% from the floor and 33% from three-point range. Samiyah Horton led the Scarlet Raiders with 20 points while Ebony Odom Barnes tallied a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double. William Paterson (3-7, 2-4) was led by Brianna Smith's 23 points. The Pioneers found their success behind the arc where they finished the game shooting 50%.

William Paterson jumped out to a 9-point lead four minutes into the game, however, with four minutes to go Horton was able to cut it to three with a fast break layup. The Pioneers answered with a run of their own to balloon their lead back to 11 points. In the second stanza, the teams played to an even 14-14 draw which sent the Pioneers into the break up by 10.

Rutgers-Newark started the third quarter sluggish and the Pioneers made them pay by extending their lead to 20 points. The Scarlet Raiders chipped away at that lead and brought it down to 15 before the teams turned the page into the final quarter of play. The Scarlet Raiders how their most prolific quarter in the game in the fourth, however, they were unable to overcome their earlier deficit.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Thursday, December 28 when they host Centenary at noon.
