Horton Joins 1,000-Point Club Against Centenary

NEWARK, NJ | Samiyah Horton etched her name into the 1,000-point club this afternoon in a 71-63 loss to Centenary University.

Rutgers-Newark (2-10) was led by Horton who tallied 25 points while Ebony Odom Barnes added 17 points. Jaielyn Alston paced the team with seven rebounds with Arlenny Medina dishing out a team-high five assists. Centenary (10-3) grabbed 57 rebounds and scored 18 second-chance points to lift them to the win. Carmen Escano and Vatijah Davis scored 17 and 15 points, respectively.

Centenary came out strong in the first quarter and scored eight unanswered points against the Scarlet Raiders. Horton hit a step-back three-point basket to put the first points of the game on the board for Rutgers-Newark. The Scarlet Raiders began to settle into the game after a 15-day break and went into the second quarter down eight.

The Scarlet Raiders' offense poured it on in the second, tallying 23 points while holding the Cyclones to 14. With 5:14 to go in the second, Odom Barnes cashed in from range to give her squad their first lead of the game.  Both defenses stepped up and held each other scoreless for the final two minutes until free throws broke up the dry spell and sent Rutgers-Newark into the locker room up one.

Out of the break, Horton scored her 1,000th career point with a three-point basket with seven minutes remaining in the third. However, the tides turned in favor of the Cyclones as they finished the quarter on a 12-5 run which put them in the driver's seat headed into the final stanza.

In the final quarter, the Scarlet Raiders were not able to regain their stride which put them in the lead in the second quarter as they fourth with play out to a 15-15 draw.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Saturday, December 30 when they host Vassar at 1:00 p.m.
