Women's Basketball Stumbles Against Vassar, 63-40

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's basketball team suffered a non-conference loss to Vassar College on Saturday afternoon, 63-40 at The Golden Dome.

Rutgers-Newark (2-11) shot 23.8% from the floor and 8.3% from three-point range in the loss. Ebony Odom Barnes paced the team with 12 points while Raihanna Abdus-Salaam finished with 10 points and five rebounds. Vassar (9-1) was led by Julia Harvey's 20 points and eight rebounds.

Vassar College opened the game shooting an impressive 42% from three which led them to a 20-8 lead by the end of the opening quarter of play. The Brewers took their large lead into the second thanks to a 12-0 run during the first quarter after Horton had originally cut it down to three.

In the second, the Scarlet Raiders' offensive struggles continued as they were held to just eight points. Defensively, however, the Scarlet Raiders tightened up and held the Brewers to 13 points and forced five turnovers.

After the halftime talks, the Scarlet Raiders came out and tallied 14 points, tying Vassar's third-quarter output. Raihaan Abdus-Salaam tallied six points in the third which brought a spark to the Scarlet Raiders' offense. Behind Abdus-Salaam and Odom Barnes, the Scarlet Raiders cut the lead down to 15 headed into the final quarter of play.

The Scarlet Raiders recorded 10 points in the fourth but were unable to close the gap against Vassar.
