Slow First Quarter Dooms Men's Basketball Against William Paterson

WAYNE, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark men's basketball dropped a crucial New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) to William Paterson on Wednesday night, 65-52.

Rutgers-Newark (5-6, 2-4) shot just 20% in the first half but bounced back in the second and shot 50% from the field. Levi Holton led the Scarlet Raiders with 14 points and six rebounds. Shy'Heed Jenkins-Floyd finished the game with 13 points and one steal. William Paterson (3-7, 1-5) shot 92% from the charity stripe and 40% from the field in the win. The Pioneers were led by Shawn Summer's 15 points.

A slow start by the Scarlet Raiders saw them fall behind by six in the opening six minutes of play. William Paterson then built upon its lead with a 13-2 run to put them up 15 with five minutes remaining in the half. Jamir Patterson and Travis Miles brought some life to the Scarlet Raiders' offense with a pair of buckets but that wasn't enough to spark their offense.

The Scarlet Raiders were a different team in the second half and outscored the Pioneers 39-33. Rutgers-Newark started the second stanza on an 11-0 run which included four points from Jenkins-Floyd. With 11:14 to go, the Scarlet Raiders knocked the lead down to eight points, however, William Paterson's offense returned and pushed their lead back to double digits where it would remain for the rest of the game.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Saturday, December 16 when they travel to Newburgh, NY to take on Mount Saint Mary College at 1:00 pm.
