Odom Barnes' Double-Double Not Enough to Topple Kean, 75-59

NEWARK, NJ | Odom Barnes tallied a 21-point, 10-rebound double-double as the Scarlet Raiders women's basketball team dropped a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) battle to Kean University, 75-59.

Rutgers-Newark (1-7, 0-3) also picked up 18 points by Samiyah Horton as the team shot 34% from the field. On the boards, Kean (4-4, 2-1) edged the Scarlet Raiders 52-38 behind Macy Seaman's 16 rebounds.

Ebony Odom Barnes was a source of light for the Scarlet Raiders in the opening stanza as she 9 of their first quarter points. The Scarlet Raiders' defense did well to stop Kean's three-point attack, holding them 1-for-8 from behind the arc. The Cougars did take advantage of the Scarlet Raiders' aggressive defense as they converted 9 of their 12 free throw attempts.

Rutgers-Newark bounced back in the second quarter in a big way, using a 9-3 run to cut the lead down to 32-29 with 1:59 to go. Aliyah Sanchez led the way during that run, cashing in with a pair of layups. That, however, is where Rutgers-Newark's offense would stall as they would go into the breakdown, 36-29.

The Scarlet Raiders overcame a slow start to the third quarter and ended with a 9-3 run led by Odom Barnes's four points. Rutgers-Newark matched its highest point total of the game in the 4th (18 points), however, the Cougars added 21 to prevent any Rutgers-Newark comeback.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Wednesday, December 6 when they travel to Galloway, NJ to take on Stockton University.
