Alston Scores Career-High in NJAC Win Over Rutgers-Camden

NEWARK, NJ | Samiyah Horton tallied 25 points in the win over Rutgers-Camden for their second win of the season, 72-60 at The Golden Dome on Saturday evening.

Rutgers-Newark (2-8, 1-4) shot 40.9% from the floor as a team and scored 30 of their points off of turnovers. Jaielyn Alston tallied a career-high 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Both Sanaa Brodie and Ebony Odom Barnes added 12 points. Rutgers-Camden (0-10, 0-5) was led by Rahzirah Blocker's 25 points.

The Scarlet Raiders broke the early deadlock with a 9-1 run with Odom Barnes and Oliver leading the way with three points each. Horton helped increase their lead during that run with a steal that led to a quick layup. The Scarlet Raptors snapped the cold spell with a wing three-point basket to prevent Rutgers-Newark from expanding its lead. As the quarter came to an end, Horton began to find the bottom of the net regularly to give her team a 17-9 lead headed into the second stanza.

Bonnie Sellers came out in the second quarter and shot her team ahead of the Scarlet Raiders with four three-point buckets. Rutgers-Camden pulled ahead by as much as six before Horton scored six to give her team a one-point lead with 53 seconds to go. Rutgers-Newark held onto the lead as they went into the half up 32-30.

Rutgers-Newark came out strong in the second half with solid performances by Alston and Sanaa Brodie. The Scarlet Raiders made the most of their possessions and took a 13-point lead into the final quarter of play thanks to a 7-0 run over the final two minutes.

In the fourth, the Scarlet Raiders stretched its lead out to 23 before the Scarlet Raptors came storming back to cut it down to 10 with 1:05 remaining. Alston would hit a pair of free throws with 45 seconds left to secure the win for Rutgers-Newark.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Wednesday, December 13 when they travel to Wayne, NJ to take on William Paterson.
