Holton Scores Career-High 20 Points in a Thrilling Loss to Stockton

NEWARK, NJ | Levi Holton scored a career-high 20 points in the narrow, 75-71, loss to Stockton University on Wednesday night at The Golden Dome in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action. The loss dropped the Scarlet Raiders to 6-15, 4-10 while Stockton improved to 18-3, 12-2.

Tyrone Bowens finished the game with a highly efficient 14 points on 7-for-9 shooting from the floor while Tony Godwin added 10. Shy'Heed Jenkins-Floyd led the team with seven rebounds and 9 assists in the loss.

The Scarlet Raiders employed their patented stout defense in the first half, holding Stockton to 29 points while scoring 36 of their own. Rutgers-Newark broke out of the deadlock that was the first 10 minutes of play when Holton electrified the crowd with his high-flying ability and slammed home an alley-op to give the Scarlet Raiders a 19-13 lead. Holton continued to feed off of the energy as he put his team up by 10 with a corner three. As the half wore on, however, Stockton began to chip away at the lead and with 2:02 remained were able to cut it down to four points. Eli Camacho, on the other hand, had a different plan was he cashed in from beyond the arc with two seconds before half time to send the Scarlet Raiders into the locker room with a seven point lead.

In the second half, Stockton made adjustments that allowed them to find holes in an otherwise formidable defensive unit in the Scarlet Raiders. Rutgers-Newark remained in front for 75% of the second quarter, however, a three-point basket by Milo De Los Santos with 4:08 to go put Stockton ahead, 67-64. Russell Ayala, with 2:04 left in the game, brought Rutgers-Newark within one. That, however, would be the final field goal the Scarlet Raiders would convert over the final two minutes as Stockton would hold onto their narrow lead for the win.
