Bowens Scores 14 in NJAC Loss to NJCU

NEWARK, NJ | For the first time since the 2018-19 season, the Scarlet Raiders fell to New Jersey City University. NJCU toppled Rutgers-Newark, 74-50 and improved to 10-12, 5-10 while Rutgers-Newark fell to 6-16, 4-11.

Tyrone Bowens led the Scarlet Raiders with 14 points on 5-for-11 shooting while Shy'Heed Jenkins-Floyd added seven points and four rebounds.

The opening half of tonight's NJAC clash didn't go to plan for the Scarlet Raiders as they were outscored 41-21. Rutgers-Newark found themselves behind early on but Travis Miles cut the lead down to three with a put back dunk. The Gothic Knights responded with a 10-4 run to go up 19-10 before driving to the rim for an easy layup. NJCU kept their foot on the gas and used another run to extend their lead out to 29-16. Bowens kept the Scarlet Raiders in the game with his inside game as he and Marshall paced the team with six first-half points.

Rutgers-Newark came out of the break will a tall mountain to climb and quickly cut the lead down to 17 behind jumpers by Levi Holton and Jenkins-Floyd. Much like the first half, NJCU would score in droves and used a 10-0 run to increase their lead to 27 over the Scarlet Raiders with 12:56 remaining. With time against them, the Scarlet Raiders were unable to overcome the deficit as they fell to NJCU in a crucial NJAC game.
