Camacho Leads Rutgers-Newark Past William Paterson with a Career-High 16 Points

WAYNE, NJ | Eli Camacho scored a career-high 16 points as Rutgers-Newark kept their New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) postseason hopes alive with a 73-70 win over William Paterson. The win boosts the Scarlet Raiders to 7-16, 5-11 while the Pioneers dropped to 9-14, 3-13.

Adding to Camacho's 16 points was Levi Holton who scored 11 while Tyrone Bowens paced the way with four rebounds.

The Scarlet Raiders and Pioneers engaged in a tight battle in the early going of the game until Holton put the Scarlet Raiders up by three with a layup off of a Shy'Heed Jenkins-Floyd steal. Holton gave the Scarlet Raiders their largest lead of the half, 22-15, when he cashed in from behind the arc. The Pioneers wouldn't trail for long as with 3:40 to go William Paterson hopped in front before Rutgers-Newark tied it up at 31. William Paterson would regain the lead and hold onto it until the halftime break.

In the second half after more back-and-forth action the Scarlet Raiders took a 10-point lead behind a Tony Godwin jumper. Camacho knotted the game up at 70 with 59 seconds to go before Russell Ayala put the Scarlet Raiders ahead for good with a driving layup. After converting the layup Rutgers-Newark tightened up their defense and forced the Pioneers into a bad shot. With six seconds left, William Paterson had one last chance, however, Ayala stole the ball to end the game in favor of the Scarlet Raiders.
