Men's Basketball Keeps it Close Against #23 Rowan But Falls 77-70

GLASSBORO, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark men's basketball team battled against #23 Rowan University and fell 77-70 on the road. With the loss the Scarlet Raiders dropped to 7-17, 5-12 while Rowan improved to 20-4, 16-1.

Kelvin Marshall had a career game and tallied a career-high 16 points on 5-of-6 shooting while going 6-for-9 from the line. Russell Ayala finished second on the team with 15 points while Tony Godwin paced the team with 9 rebounds.

In the first half the opening 13 minutes went back and forth with neither team able to gain a foothold and pull away from the other. Godwin, however, cashed in on a three-point basket before following up with a jumper to put his team ahead by three. Rowan tied the game up at 24 and followed that up with an eight point lead. As time wore down the Scarlet Raiders closed the game and briefly took the lead with a minute left after Eli Camacho hit a three-point basket. The Profs, however, wouldn't head into their home locker room behind on the scoreboard as they jumped ahead by three before the break.

Out of the break, the Profs held onto their lead for a majority of the second half until the 6:38 mark when Ayala hit a shot to put the Scarlet Raiders up by a pair. The lead, however, wouldn't last for long as Rowan would convert a shot and take the lead which they would hold onto until the end of the game.
