Women's Basketball Falls in Season Finale Against TCNJ

NEWARK, NJ | Syncere Lambert and Elisha India Cross were honored on senior night for the Scarlet Raiders prior to their battle against The College of New Jersey. In the final game of the season Rutgers-Newark was bested by TCNJ, 72-44 to close out their season with a record of 3-22, 1-17. TCNJ will now gear up to make a run at the NJAC Championship as they moved to 16-9, 11-7.

Samiyah Horton paced the Scarlet Raiders with 15 points, five steals and four rebounds. India Cross followed up with 9 points and led the team with five assists while Lambert added eight on senior night.

The Scarlet Raiders opened the first quarter of play with 13 points, however, the Lions came out on fire and shot 55% from the field and beyond the arc in the first quarter to take a 28-13 lead after one quarter of play. In the second stanza, the Scarlet Raiders' offense cooled and tallied just eight points while TCNJ kept their foot on the gas and scored another 16 to take a 44-21 lead into the locker room.

Out of the break, the Lions of TCNJ kept the same tempo and held the Scarlet Raiders to eight points once again while adding 17 to their marker. Lambert and India Cross tried to bring Rutgers-Newark back in the fourth by helping the Scarlet Raiders score 15 points. The strong offensive out put wasn't enough to climb back into the contest as they were battling the clock after trailing by 30 to start the final stanza.

With the loss, the Scarlet Raiders' season comes to an end and they will look to rebuild and fight for a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Playoff spot next season in year two under head coach Stacey Townsend.
