Horton Outperforms Rodriguez But Rutgers-Newark Falls to NJCU, 83-65

NEWARK, NJ | Samiyah Horton outdueled Damaris Rodriguez with 33 points, however, the Scarlet Raiders fell to the Gothic Knights, 83-65. With the loss, Rutgers-Newark dropped to 3-19, 1-14 while the win bumped NJCU up to 11-10, 11-4.

Horton nearly tied her career-high of 36 in the loss while Ebony Odom Barnes added 12 and paced the team with five rebounds. Syncere Lambert tallied 9 points and Elisha India Cross dished out a team-high four assists.

The Gothic Knights took advantage of the gaps at the top of the arc against the Scarlet Raiders to jump out to a 10-0 in the opening two minutes behind eight points from Damaris Rodriguez. Aliyah Sanchez broke the scoreless spell with a layup inside before Samiyah Horton converted a pair from the charity stripe to cut the lead down to 10-4. NJCU kept finding the bottom of the net, however, the Scarlet Raiders' offense began to heat up as they found space in the painted area.

In the second, the Gothic Knights remained efficient from the floor, shooting 46% while holding the Scarlet Raiders to 31%. Horton and company cut the lead down, however, NJCU came out in the second stanza and used a 12-3 run to prevent Rutgers-Newark from closing the gap.

Rutgers-Newark came out strong after the break and went on an 8-4 run behind Horton's four points. The momentum wouldn't remain in Rutgers-Newark's favor as NJCU responded with a 9-2 run. Syncere Lambert brought the Scarlet Raiders back in it with a step back jumper but both teams cooled off for the remaining two minutes of action as NJCU took a 63-45 lead into the final stanza.

The Scarlet Raiders shot their highest percentage of the game in the fourth quarter (50%) and matched NJCU's output with 20 points. Despite the high output, Rutgers-Newark was unable to overcome their deficit as they fell to the Gothic Knights at home.
