Softball Drops Opening NJAC Twinbill to Montclair

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark softball team dropped its New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) season opener to Montclair this afternoon, 9-1 and 12-2. The pair of losses dropped the Scarlet Raiders to 6-10, 0-2 while the Red Hawks improved to 16-4, 2-0.

Game 1: Montclair 9, Rutgers-Newark 1

Michelle McMillan tallied the two lone hits for the Scarlet Raiders and secured the only run. In the circle, Madison Umlauf (3-6) hurled six innings and allowed 12 hits with six earned runs and one strikeout.

The first run of the game wouldn't come until the 3rd inning when Alison Miller walked to put a runner on the bases. Alexis Claiborne would reach first on a fielder's choice before advancing via a passed ball. McMillan, down in the count, hammered the ball to left field, just missing a home run, as it fell in for an RBI triple.

Montclair responded with the tying run in the top of the 4th before plating eight more runs over the final three innings.

Game 2: Montclair 12, Rutgers-Newark 2 (5 inn.)

The Scarlet Raiders scattered six hits as a team and committed two errors. The six hits were spread across six batters, McMillan, Alex Di Martino, Josephine Morales, Gabriela Forese, Marissa Houseknecht, and Alison Miller. Madison DiGiorgio (3-4) allowed 9 runs on six hits in 2.2 innings with one strikeout in the loss.

Montclair opened the game with a pair of runs in the top of the frame before the Scarlet Raiders knotted the game up at two with a pair in the bottom. Top of the lineup hitters, McMillan and Di Martino each recorded a hit before advancing on a passed ball. With both runners in scoring position, Forese hit a 2 RBI single through the right side to get the Scarlet Raiders on the board.

After that opening inning, the Scarlet Raiders' bats cooled off as Montclair went on to capitalize off of errors to plate 10 runs over two innings to activate the mercy rule and end the second game in five innings.
