Fernandez & Nephew Lift Rutgers-Newark Over Union in Season Opener

NEWARK, NJ | Vielka Fernandez and Julia Nephew each found the back of the net in a 2-1 win over Union College in the season opener at Frederick Douglass Field this afternoon.

Rutgers-Newark (1-0) took 11 shots and put six on target while Union (0-1) fired 15 shots and put 14 on frame. Katie McLaughlin was sensational between the pipes for the Scarlet Raiders all afternoon and made 14 saves.

Union College was awarded a penalty kick 10 minutes into the game, however, McLaughlin was up for the challenge and made a kick save to keep the Garnet Chargers off of the scoreboard. Union wouldn't relent, and that constant pressure eventually led to a goal by Sam Friedman in the 16th minute. As the game wore on, the Scarlet Raiders became more comfortable on their pitch and the offense began to become fluid.

Rutgers-Newark unlocked the Union's defensive unit via a well-placed through ball by Leila Ettayebi. Ettayebi's pass found the feet of Fernandez, who subbed on just two minutes earlier, where she was able to strike it over Rachel Berliner for her first collegiate goal and to tie the game up at one.

In the second half, the Scarlet Raiders continued where they left off in the first which helped pay dividends in the 69th minute. Fernandez, once again, had a hand in helping the Scarlet Raiders as her cross would initially be blocked after beating a defender along the wing only to find the foot of Julia Nephew who tucked it side-netting for what would be the game-winning goal. Down a goal, Union increased the offensive pressure but the Scarlet Raiders remained disciplined and held the Garnet Chargers to just one goal.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Sunday, September 3 when they host St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn at 11:00 a.m.
