Four Score as Rutgers-Newark Women's Soccer Improves to 2-0

NEWARK, NJ | Four different goal scorers powered the Rutgers-Newark women's soccer team past St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn Sunday afternoon at Frederick Douglass Field.

The Scarlet Raiders (2-0) tallied 43 shots as a team and put 18 of them on frame while holding St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn (1-1) without a shot.

Riley Haggerty put the Scarlet Raiders on the board just six minutes into the game. Haggerty received a pass from Kaylo Moncada and uncorked a canon of shot over the outstretched arms of Julia Marin from 25 yards out. Just five minutes later, the Scarlet Raiders struck again, this time it was the dynamic duo of the Valencia sisters. Mariana Valencia beat her opponent along the flank which opened space for her to send a through ball to Viviana Valencia who neatly tucked the ball into the back of the net.

The Scarlet Raiders kept the pressure on throughout the first half and continued to pepper the net, however, they were unable to find their 3rd until after the break. One of those players peppering the net was Leila Ettayebi as she finished the game with a team-high 13 shots.

In the second half, it was time for the freshman class to shine and they did not disappoint. Valery Silvera sailed a pass into the box and found the foot of Xiomara Rivera who placed it into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal. Rivera's day in the stat sheet wasn't over as she would go on to assist a goal just three minutes later. Janelle Atta took the pass from Rivera and hammered a shot off of the crossbar and into the net to give the Scarlet Raiders a 4-0 lead with 11 minutes to go. Once again, the Scarlet Raiders didn't hold back and continued to pressure but saw a few shots bounce off of the woodwork and out of play.

The Scarlet Raiders will put its unblemished record on the line on Wednesday, September 6 when they hit the road for the first time this season against Swarthmore at 7:30 pm.
