Swarthmore Hands Women's Soccer its First Loss of the Season, 2-0

SWARTHMORE, PA | The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season this evening against Swarthmore, 2-0. 

The Scarlet Raiders (2-1) played a tight game on the field as they remained sound defensively for 76 minutes until Swarthmore (3-0) broke through for their first goal of the game. The Garnets held a large 30-11 edge in shots, putting half on target. Leading the way in the shot column for the Scarlet Raiders was Leila Ettayebi who finished the game with a team-high eight shots. Between the pipes, Katie McLaughlin tallied 13 saves.

Rutgers-Newark was under siege from the first whistle as the Garnets tallied four shots in the first five minutes of the game. Ettayebi laid a seige of her own halfway through the opening stanza, rifling three shots towards goal which forced Nora Greer to make a save. The Scarlet Raiders' discipline in the back allowed them to take a 0-0 score into the half. 

It wasn't until late in the second half that Swarthmore unlocked the Scarlet Raiders' defense and beat McLaughlin. In the 77th minute, Swarthmore's Ava Gizzie snuck a shot past McLaughlin for the goal before Swarthmore doubled their tally just five minutes later. Rutgers-Newark's Ettayebi and Riley Haggerty tried to even the playing field, however, they were unable to find the back of the net. 

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Friday when they travel to Dallas, PA to take on Clarkson.
