Maynor Registers Career-High in Five-Set Thriller Over FDU-Florham

MADISON, NJ | Kaiel Maynor recorded a career-high 20 kills in the five-set (25-13, 25-22, 25-19, 25-18, 16-14)thrilling win over FDU-Florham on Tuesday evening.

Rutgers-Newark (2-1) hit .141 as a team and tallied 9 service aces, while FDU-Florham (4-3) registered 68 digs and 11 service aces. Angelyse Orellana paced the Scarlet Raiders with 34 assists while Ijeh led the way with five total blocks.

The Scarlet Raiders came out flat in the opening set and suffered their largest loss of the evening, however, they would battle back in the second set with a 25-22 victory. Rutgers-Newark trailed early on but used kills by Shayla Moody and Maynor to jump ahead of the Devils. A back-and-forth affair followed with neither team able to take a substantial lead but once again it was Maynor who slammed the door shut to even the match at one.

Rutgers-Newark once again fell behind early and this time were unable to climb out of the hole as FDU-Florham led wire-to-wire to take the match lead. The Scarlet Raiders, however, were not going to go out that easily as Maynor and Maryann Ijeh put together a kill streak to put them in the driver's seat of the fourth set.

After taking down the Devils in the fourth set, Rutgers-Newark was determined to walk away with a win this evening and they would do just that. Rutgers-Newark held a 12-9 lead late in the fifth set, but FDU-Florham was able to knot it up and take a one-point lead. Kills by Ijeh and Briana Gaviria put Rutgers-Newark ahead to set up Maynor to lock in the final point with a service ace.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Thursday, September 14 where they will hit the road to take on Mt. St. Mary College at 7:00 pm.
