Women's Volleyball Wins 2nd Straight With 3-1 Win Over Mt. St. Mary College

Box Score NEWBURGH, NY | The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball squad won its second straight match this evening against Mt. St. Mary College, 3-1 (26-24, 25-23, 25-23, 25-20). 

Rutgers-Newark (3-1) was once again led by Kaiel Maynor with 12 kills while the team hit .133 for the night. Mia Espinoza and Maryann Ijeh paced the team with three blocks each and Angelyse Orellana led the way with 25 assists and 14 digs. Mt. St. Mary College (0-7) suffered 29 attacking errors in the loss. 

Rutgers-Newark dropped the opening set despite a late surge which knotted it up at 24 and forced the set to go two extra points. The Scarlet Raiders saw themselves fall behind once again in the second set, however, this would turn out differently than the first as a kill by Maynor propelled them to the finish line. 

The Scarlet Raiders kept the momentum on their side in the third set and once again rallied down the stretch to steal a win from the Knights. With the set tied at 23, Shayla Moody secured a service ace before Aliyah Sanchez powered the set-winning kill to put the Scarlet Raiders up 2-1. In the fourth and final set, the Scarlet Raiders took a 2-1 lead and never looked back as they held onto the lead and carried that to victory.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Saturday, September 16 when they host Valley Forge and Keystone in a tri-match.
