Women's Volleyball Splits Tri-Match With Keystone & Valley Forge

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball squad split its first tri-match of the season against Keystone College and the University of Valley Forge. 

Match 1: Keystone 3, Rutgers-Newark 0 (25-14, 27-25, 25-13)

Rutgers-Newark (3-2) was led by Kaiel Maynor and Maryann Ijeh with eight kills each. Angelyse Orellana finished the match with a team-high 20 assists while Briana Gaviria led the way with 15 digs. Keystone (1-5) was led by Rebecca Jackson who finished with 13 kills and Hailey Herneisey picked up four service aces.

The Scarlet Raiders got off to a slow start against the Giants and they fell behind 13-7. Maynor tried to reignite the Scarlet Raiders, however, Keystone responded with an 8-2 run to close out the set. Rutgers-Newark played better and forced the set to go past 25. The Scarlet Raiders trailed 22-19 and rallied back with a 6-1 run with a pair of kills by Maynor. Maynor tied the set up at 25, however, Keystone found the final two points of the set to take a 2-0 lead in the match. 

Keystone returned to form and used a 9-0 run early in the set to create a gap that the Scarlet Raiders were unable to come back from. 

Match 2: Rutgers-Newark 3, Valley Forge 0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-19)

Rutgers-Newark (4-2) was led by Maynor's 16 kills and Jackie Rosario's 10 assists. Valley Forge (0-8) was led by Caitlyn Fisher's four kills and Telia Robinson's five digs. 

The Scarlet Raiders came out strong against the Patriots in the opening set and used a 9-1 run to jump out ahead 11-4. The strong play continued as three Destiny Skinner aces helped the Scarlet Raiders vault further into the lead as they would go on to take a 1-0 lead in the match. 

From there, the Scarlet Raiders continued to put together strong rallies and would hold on to the lead and sweep the Patriots to go 1-1 on the day. 

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on on Tuesday, September 19 when they travel to New Jersey City University at 7:00 pm.
