Women's Volleyball Opens NJAC Play With 3-1 Win Over NJCU

JERSEY CITY, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball squad opened New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play this evening with a 3-1 (25-23, 25-19, 25-15, 25-23) victory over New Jersey City University (NJCU).

Rutgers-Newark (5-2, 1-0) was once again led by NJAC Player of the Week Kaiel Maynor who finished with a match-high 11 kills while Angelyse Orellana tallied 28 assists. Yzana Harwood was solid for the Scarlet Raiders in the back row as she recorded 11 digs. NJCU (1-3, 0-1) hit negative as a team and were held to just 23 kills on the night.

The Scarlet Raiders dropped the opening set to the Gothic Knights after battling back from being down by four. In the second set, Rutgers-Newark led wire-to-wire after bursting the set open with a 7-0 run led by Maynor with help from Mia Espinoza and Shayla Moody

That momentum carried over to the third set as the Scarlet Raiders remained in control. Maryann Ijeh secured back-to-back kills for Rutgers-Newark, pushing them into the lead 13-7. The Gothic Knights tried to claw their way back into the set, however, Elvin Karakaya closed out the set with a kill to put Rutgers-Newark up 2-1 in the match.

NJCU came out strong in the fourth set and led 8-2. They would carry that lead until it was 19-13 where Rutgers-Newark exploded for a 7-0 run which vaulted them into the lead. Errors by NJCU allowed the Scarlet Raiders to remain in front as Karakaya and Espinoza secured kills to close out the match.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Thursday, September 21 when they host Centenary at 7:00 pm.
