Women's Volleyball Drops Non-Conference Bout To Centenary, 3-0

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball squad had its two-match win streak come to a close this evening at The Golden Dome when they fell in straight sets, 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-21) to Centenary University.

Rutgers-Newark (5-3) hit .189 as a team and was led by Kaiel Maynor's eight kills. Defensively, Yzana Harwood tallied a team-high 11 digs while Angelyse Orellana led the way with 14 assists. Centenary (6-3) was led by Poppy Skjonnemand's 15 kills and 11 digs.

In the first set, the Scarlet Raiders held a small 7-5 lead after Maynor found an opening in Centenary's defense and exploited it. The cyclones, however, responded with an 8-1 run that put them in the driver's seat, 13-8.  From there, the Scarlet Raiders tried to find their way back into the set but were unable to do so despite a late 3-0 run.

Rutgers-Newark quickly fell behind in the second set, 5-1, but battled back to take a 9-8 lead thanks to a service ace by Briana Gaviria. But once again, Centenary found their stride and used an 8-1 run to jump in front. The Scarlet Raiders tried to regain the lead with a late 5-2 run which saw a kill by Brianna Rojas, however, Skjonnemand closed out the set to go up 2-0.

The Scarlet Raiders came out strong in the third set, taking a 4-1 lead. That wouldn't last long as Centenary came screaming back to go ahead 6-4. From there the set would go back and forth until a 5-0 run by the Cyclones put them ahead 21-17. Aliyah Sanchez brought them within three with a kill, but it wasn't enough to spark the Scarlet Raiders' offense.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Saturday, September 23 where they will host Lehman College and Purchase for a tri-match.
