Women's Volleyball Sweeps Tri-Match Against Lehman & Purchase

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball squad swept its tri-match against Lehman and Purchase on Saturday at the Golden Dome in Newark, NJ.

Match 1: Rutgers-Newark 3, Lehman 0 (25-13, 25-5, 25-23)

Rutgers-Newark (6-3) was led by Kaiel Maynor's 9 kills and seven digs while Jackie Rosario paved the way with a team-high eight assists. Lehman (1-8) hit -.245 as a team while Ana Mena tallied all six of her team's kills.

The Scarlet Raiders and Lightning opened the first match of the day with back-and-forth action in the early goings of the set, however, Rutgers-Newark used a 9-3 run behind a pair of kills by Kaiel Maynor and one kill from Shayla Moody. Maryann Ijeh then built off of her teammate's success to close out the set, with a pair of kills as the Scarlet Raiders went up 1-0 in the match.

The second set saw the Scarlet Raiders lead wire-to-wire thanks to two service aces by Emma Walters to start her team off in the right direction. Lehman struggled with attacking errors for the remainder of the set and was unable to climb their way back into the match.

In the third set, the Scarlet Raiders looked to be off to a similar start to the second set as Sanaa Brodie secured five straight service aces to help her team take a 9-2 lead. Halfway through the set, Lehman used a 6-1 run to knot it up at 16. Maynor and Samauria Williams teamed up to break the deadlock and propel the Scarlet Raiders into the lead. The Lightning would tie the set up once again at 23 but Jackie Rosario closed out the match with a service ace.

Match 2: Rutgers-Newark 3, Purchase 1 (25-17, 25-20, 25-21, 25-11)

Rutgers-Newark (7-3) was led by the tandem of Maryann Ijeh and Kaiel Maynor who each finished with 9 kills. Angelyse Orellana paced the team with six service aces while adding a team-high 16 digs. Purchase (3-8) hit .045 as a team and tallied 64 digs as a squad.

The Scarlet Raiders picked up where they left off to open the day with a 25-17 win over the Purchase Panthers in set one. Rutgers-Newark benefitted from attacking errors by the Panthers during a 6-2 run to jump ahead 14-8. Angelyse Orellana scored back-to-back service aces for the Scarlet Raiders to further extend their lead over Purchase. Maryann Ijeh aided the Scarlet Raiders on their 8-2 closeout of set one to go up 1-0 in the match.

Purchase came out strong in the second set and stole a win from the Scarlet Raiders to knot the match up at one. The Panthers latched onto a small lead for the early goings of the set and eventually extended it to as much as five. Despite a late push by the Scarlet Raiders, they were unable to overcome the deficit as they would go on to fall to the Panthers.

Rutgers-Newark bounced back in the third set with 14 kills and a .133 hit percentage. The Scarlet Raiders made sure there was no doubt in the third set and led by as much as seven behind a kill from Ijeh. Purchase clawed their way back into the match and trailed by only three down the stretch before Ijeh closed out the set.

In the fourth and final set, the Scarlet Raiders continued their strong play to close out the match with a 25-11 win.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Tuesday, September 26 when they host Hunter at 7:00 p.m.
