Nephew and Fernandez Score As Women's Soccer Knocks Off King's College

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team knocked off King's College, 2-1 on Saturday evening at Frederick Douglass Field.

Rutgers-Newark (4-3) tallied 27 shots and put 14 on target while King's (1-3-1) took 12 and put 9 on target. Leila Ettayebi led all student-athletes with 14 shots and put five on frame. Katie McLaughlin was sensational between the pipes and made eight saves on the night.

The Monarchs were first on the board, scoring a goal in the 35th minute when Brooke Finlay scored her rebound after her penalty kick was saved by McLaughlin. McLaughlin continued to keep the Scarlet Raiders in the game as she made save after save which kept King's to just one goal.

Julia Nephew put Rutgers-Newark on the board in the second half when she hit a low driven shot into the bottom left corner off of a pass from Tamia Howell. Shortly after, Ettayebi hit a corner kick to the front post where Vielka Fernandez was there waiting to tap it into the back of the net. The Scarlet Raiders would have a few more chances but would be stymied and held to two goals on the night.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Wednesday, September 20 when they travel to FDU-Florham for a bout at 7:00 pm.
