Seven First Half Goals Guide Men's Soccer Past Centenary

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer squad used a seven-goal first half to topple Centenary, 7-1, in its final tune-up before NJAC play. 

Rutgers-Newark (2-4-2) was led by Dylan Sousa's three goals. The Scarlet Raiders also outshot the Cyclones (0-7-1) 20-3 in the game. 

The Cyclones were first to the scoreboard against the Scarlet Raiders at Frederick Douglass Field. 13 minutes into the game, Keven Lopez broke free behind the Scarlet Raiders' defensive line and powered his shot past Pedro Flores. Rutgers-Newark was quick to respond, leveling the game just seven minutes late behind a goal from Pablo Moreno. Erick Cortes then scored what would be the game-winning goal when Jake Milne found Cortes for an easy tap-in. 

Two quick goals scored by Cortes and Dylan Sousa further increased the Scarlet Raiders' lead over the Cyclones. Sousa's goal-scoring day wasn't done as he'd go on to score two more goals in the next two minutes, good for a three-minute hat-trick. Michael Reis capped off a seven goal outburst in the first half when he rifled one into the back of the net off of a pass from Esteban Hidalgo. 

In the second half, the Scarlet Raiders kept their foot on the pedal which limited Centenary's offensive opportunities. Rutgers-Newark controlled the pace of play in the second half and continued to pepper the Cyclones with shots but were unable to find another goal.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Saturday, September 23 where they will open New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play against Stockton on the road at 1:00 pm.
