Women's Soccer Falls to Stockton in NJAC Opener, 1-0

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer squad dropped its opening New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game to Stockton under heavy rain at Frederick Douglass Field.

Rutgers-Newark (4-5, 0-1) tallied 20 shots and put eight on frame while Stockton (6-0-3, 1-0) recorded 11 with eight on frame. Ettayebi finished the game with 9 shots while McLaughlin finished with seven saves.

The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team controlled the pace of play in the first half and put eight shots toward goal with five forcing a save. Tamia Howell, led the Scarlet Raiders with four shots in the first half while Leila Ettayebi rifled off two shots from distance both nearly missing the post. Stockton eventually worked their way into the game and began to test Katie McLaughlin but McLaughlin was up for the task in the deluge and kept the ball out of her net.

The Scarlet Raiders opened the second half how they ended the first with full control of the game. As the game wore on, however, Stockton began to find its way and eventually broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute. Stockton picked up a through ball on the right flank and sent a cross into the box. The Scarlet Raiders were unable to successfully clear the ball as it fell to the foot of Kylee Reissek who hammered it into the back of the net.

Rutgers-Newark switched up to a more attacking formation to try to find the game-tying goal but were unable to do so as they would go on to fall to Stockton.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Wednesday, September 27 when they travel to Wayne, NJ to take on William Paterson University at 7:00 p.m.
