Seven Different Goal Scorers Power Men's Soccer Through William Paterson, 7-2

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team toppled NJAC opponents William Paterson, 7-2, in its NJAC home opener.

The Scarlet Raiders got off to the start they hoped for in their New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) home opener this evening at Frederick Douglass Field as Rutgers-Newark recorded five first half goals from five different goal scorers.

Rutgers-Newark (3-4-3, 1-0-1) out shot William Paterson (4-6, 0-2) 29 (18) to 7 (3) in the game.

Rutgers-Newark stamped the first goal in the ledger eight minutes into the contest when they won a free-kick just outside the 18 yard box. Jonah Dias stepped up to the kick and hit a low curled free kick around the wall into the bottom right corner. Jean Paul Solano doubled the Scarlet Raiders' lead in the 21st minute when Erick Cortes laid off a pass at the top of the box to Solano who ripped a shot into the left net. Just two minutes later Erick Morales headed the ball into the back of the net off of a cross from Marlon Rodriguez

The Scarlet Raiders kept their foot on the pedal and as a result, Frank Lozano recorded his first collegiate goal. Jake Milne broke free in the box and hit a hard driven cross toward Lozano who was able to redirect it through the legs of Thomas Hatch. Brandon Castro made the most of his time on the pitch after getting subbed into the game as he picked up a loose ball at the top of the box and curled a shot into the right side of the net to send his team into the half up 5-0 over William Paterson.

William Paterson wouldn't go quietly as Diego Navas earned a penalty kick before doubling his tally in the game just one minute after converting the penalty kick. Rutgers-Newark responded 10 minutes later when Gerson Gonzalez-Quevedo shot one into the back of the net which was followed up by a goal from Cortes.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Saturday, September 30 when they travel to take on Rowan University at 1:00 p.m.
