Women's Volleyball Downs St. Elizabeth & Bryn Athyn in Tri-Match

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark swept its final home tri-match of the season with a 3-1 win against Saint Elizabeth University and a 3-0 sweep of Bryn Athyn.

Match 1: Rutgers-Newark 3, St. Elizabeth 1 (25-23, 25-21, 25-23, 25-21)

Rutgers-Newark (8-5) hit .043 as a team and were led by Kaiel Maynor's 13 kills and 19 digs. Angelyse Orellana paced the team with 28 assists while adding eight service aces. Saint Elizabeth (3-9) was led by Sienna Volpe's 13 kills and Ava Railton's 21 digs.

Yzana Harwood propelled the Scarlet Raiders into the lead with a service ace to cap a 5-0 run. SEU followed with a 4-0 run of their own to regain the lead. Back-and-forth action ensued until the end of the set where a pair of kills by Maynor closed out the set and put Rutgers-Newark ahead 1-0 in the match.

The Eagles jumped out to an early lead in the second set as they benefited from a 5-0 run. The Scarlet Raiders, however, responded with a 13-1 run led by four service aces from Orellana. St. Elizabeth made one last push at the end, using a 4-0 run to come within two of the Scarlet Raiders. Aliyah Sanchez and Mia Espinoza slammed the door shut on the Eagles to go up 2-0 in the match.

Saint Elizabeth used a late rally in the third set to prevent the sweep as they held off the Scarlet Raiders to cut the lead down to 2-1 in the match.

Once again the Scarlet Raiders fell behind but quickly climbed out of their deficit. Rutgers-Newark eventually built their lead to 17-11 aided by a pair of kills from Shayla Moody. The Eagles used a 4-0 run at the end of the set to make a case for the lead but Espinoza secured the win for her squad with a kill.

Match 2: Rutgers-Newark 3, Bryn Athyn 0 (25-14, 25-9)

In the second match of the afternoon, the Scarlet Raiders (9-5) took down Bryn Athyn (0-12) in straight sets. The match was called after the second set due to Bryn Athyn unable to play a full rotation due to injury.

Shayla Moody led the team with eight kills while Samauria Williams recorded a hit percentage of .750.

The Scarlet Raiders played to their strengths in the opening set which allowed them to jump out to a 12-4 lead behind a kill from Moody. Yzana Harwood picked up a service ace to help the Scarlet Raiders further extend their lead before they closed out the set.

In the second set, Rutgers-Newark picked up where they left off and used a series of long runs to keep Bryn Athyn at bay as they cruised to a 25-9 victory.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Tuesday, October 3 when they travel to take on Rowan University at 7:00 p.m.
