Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Rutgers-Newark Athletic Communications

Women's Volleyball Starts Season With 3-1 Win Over Rosemont

ROSEMONT, PA | The new-look Scarlet Raiders women's volleyball squad under new head coach Sovanny Kon won its opening match of the 2023 campaign with a 3-1 (25-17, 25-21, 25-18, 25-20) victory over Rosemont.

Rutgers-Newark (1-0) was led by Maryann Ijeh's 14 kills on a blistering hit percentage of .565. Rosemont (0-1) was held to .060 hit percentage as a team and tallied 20 errors. Angelyse Orellana led the team with 16 assists while Shayla Moody tallied two blocks.

In the opening set, the Scarlet Raiders led 14-10, however, Rosemont used a 9-0 run to propel themselves into the lead. Momentum remained on the side of Rosemont as Rutgers-Newark only tallied three more points the rest of the set.

Rutgers-Newark got on the board in the second set, when they extended their lead behind a Kaiel Maynor kill. Back-to-back kills by Ijeh kept the Scarlet Raiders ahead, however, Rosemont responded with a 6-1 run that brought them within two. Rutgers-Newark was up to the task and went on a run of their own to close out the set and even the match at one.

The Scarlet Raiders fell behind in the third set of the day but rebounded with a 9-0 run, much like Rosemont did in set one to take the lead. Once in the driver's seat, the wouldn't relinquish the lead.

In the final set, both teams sat in the lead, however, it was the Scarlet Raiders who came out on top after breaking the 19-19 deadlock. Ijeh secured two kills during a 6-1 run to lift the Scarlet Raiders to their first win of the season.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Thursday, September 7 when they host Farmingdale at 6:00 pm.
