Women's Volleyball Falls in Four Sets to Farmingdale

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball squad suffered its first loss of the season this evening after falling 3-1 (27-25, 25-13, 25-12, 25-17) to Farmingdale College.

Rutgers-Newark (1-1) hit .054 as a squad while Farmingdale (1-2) hit .168 for the match. Leading the way with a match-high 18 kills was Kalena Ricketts of Farmingdale while Kaiel Maynor led the way for the Scarlet Raiders.

In the opening stanza, the Scarlet Raiders and Rams were locked in a heated back-and-forth battle from start to finish. Rutgers-Newark led for the first half of the set until Farmingdale used a 7-0 to jump in front, 18-15. Maryann Ijeh sparked a run for the Scarlet Raiders which allowed them to erase their deficit and take a one-point lead. The Scarlet Raiders then benefited from a pair of attacking errors before Kaiel Maynor slammed the door shut and put her squad up 1-0 in the match.

Farmingdale came out in the second set with a point to prove after falling 27-25 in the opening one. The Rams were dominant from the first serve, jumping out to a 7-1 lead. Rutgers-Newark tried to claw its way back into the set but was unable to do so as Farmingdale closed out the set 25-13 to even the match at one.

The third set played out much the same way as the second set did with Farmingdale taking the lead from the first serve. The Rams made sure to stay in front and close out the set 25-12.

In the fourth and final set, the Scarlet Raiders trailed by two before Farmingdale used a 6-0 run to propel them further into the lead where they would hold on and win the match in four sets.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Tuesday, September 12 when they travel to take on FDU-Florham at 7:00 pm.
