Late Game Heroics Lifts Men's Basketball Past Ramapo, 61-57

NEWARK, NJ | Late-game heroics lift the Rutgers-Newark men's basketball team past Ramapo College, 61-57, at The Golden Dome on Wednesday evening.

Rutgers-Newark (9-8, 5-5) got revenge against their earlier loss to Ramapo in the season with 33.3% shooting from behind the arc. Travis Miles led the Scarlet Raiders with 18 points while Shy'Heed Jenkins-Floyd added 16 on 50% shooting. Russell Ayala dished out a team-high six assists in the win. Ramapo (12-5, 6-4) shot 45% from the floor and was led by Shane Rooney who tallied an 18-point, 10 rebound double-double.

Holton broke out of the gate and gave the Scarlet Raiders an 8-4 lead early behind a pair of baskets with help from Travis Miles and Kelvin Marshall. Ramapo took the lead at the 10-minute mark and extended its lead to five which they would carry into the locker room after a back-and-forth opening half.

In the second half, Shy'Heed Jenkins-Floyd put Rutgers-Newark ahead 39-37 with 14:13 remaining to force Ramapo to call a timeout to slow the red-hot Scarlet Raiders off. Jenkins-Floyd remained locked in and increased the lead to five with a three-point basket which ignited the crowd. Down three points, Ramapo used a 10-2 run to swap the game in their favor. Russell Ayala sparked the Scarlet Raiders' offense with a three-point bucket to cut the lead down to three before dishing a pass inside to Miles for the easy layup and the point after to knot the game up at 55.

Ayala once again got the crowd out of their seats with a long-range basket at 1:25, putting Rutgers-Newark ahead by two. Tight defense by the Scarlet Raiders forced a turnover which the Scarlet Raiders turned into points at the other end via a two-handed jam by Miles. With seven seconds remaining, Ramapo tried to get their offense going again but Ayala made sure to put an end to it with a steal, to end any comeback push by the Roadrunners.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Saturday, January 20 when they travel to Union, NJ to take on Kean University.
