Men's Basketball Shoots 61% From Three-Point Range in Narrow Win Over Kean

UNION, NJ | Russell Ayala went 5-for-6 from three-point range and helped the Scarlet Raiders sneak past Kean, 68-63, in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action.

Rutgers-Newark (10-8, 6-5) shot 47% from the field and a scorching hot 61% from three. Levi Holton finished with 15 points, second best on the team, while Travis Miles added 11. Shy'Heed Jenkins-Floyd dished out a team-high eight assists in the win. Kean (8-10, 5-6) was led by D.J. Alicea who netted a game-high 29 points.

Ayala started the game on the right foot, cashing in from range, a shot that would set the tone for the Scarlet Raiders for the remainder of the game. Eventually, the game would knot up at 10 before Rutgers-Newark found its stride and pushed their lead out to 12 points behind a Holton jumper. Over the final five minutes of the half, the Cougars cut into the lead and trailed by five at the break.

Eight minutes into the second half and the Scarlet Raiders' lead was down to a single point. Rutgers-Newark responded with an 8-0 run with points from Pascal Dodard, Chino Anyanwu and Ayala. With the lead in hand, the Scarlet Raiders' defense forced the Cougars into low percentage shots, which allowed the Scarlet Raiders to hold onto their second straight NJAC win.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Wednesday, January 24 when they host Montclair State University at 8:00 p.m.
