Men's Basketball Comes Up Short Against Montclair

NEWARK, NJ | Levi Holton poured in a game-high 29 points in the 74-64 loss to Montclair State University on Wednesday evening at The Golden Dome in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action.

Rutgers-Newark (10-9, 6-6) shot 40% from the floor and 62% from the charity stripe in the loss. Travis Miles added 13 points and six rebounds while Holton collected a double-double with a game-high 13 rebounds. Montclair (13-6, 8-4) was led by Keyon Price and Kieran Flanagan who each tallied 17 points.

Trailing 9-7, eight minutes in, Rutgers-Newark went on an 8-0 run capped by a jumper from Preston Brown to put themselves in the driver's seat. Montclair wouldn't go quietly as they chipped away at that lead until they reversed the roles and took charge in the game. The Red Hawks pushed its lead out to eight before the Scarlet Raiders cut it down to five before the half.

Montclair came out of the break hot and bumped their lead up to 12 just three minutes into the half. With 10 minutes remaining, Pascal Dodard knocked down a pair of free throws to bring the Scarlet Raiders within striking distance. Holton then brought Rutgers-Newark within three when he elevated above the rim for a two-handed jam which ignited the crowd. The Scarlet Raiders' offense would cool off to open the door for Montclair to push its lead to 10 with four minutes to go. With a double-digit deficit, the Scarlet Raiders were not able to muster up another run to put them in front as they suffered a crucial NJAC loss.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Saturday, January 27 where they will travel south to take on Rutgers-Camden in NJAC play.
