Men's Basketball Loses Bout to Rutgers-Camden in NJAC Play

CAMDEN, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark men's basketball squad dropped its second consecutive New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game to Rutgers-Camden on Saturday afternoon, 64-51.

Rutgers-Newark (10-10, 6-7) shot 36.7% from the floor and 20% from three-point range in the loss. Levi Holton paced the team with 13 points while Travis Miles nearly recorded a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds. Rutgers-Camden (11-9, 6-7) shot 48% from the floor and was led by Cameron Downs' 29 points.

Through the opening seven minutes of the game, the Scarlet Raiders held a slight edge, thanks to the trio of Kelvin Marshall, Holton and Miles. The Scarlet Raptors responded with a 12-3 run which put them ahead, 28-15. The Scarlet Raiders struggled to get its offense moving again and at the half, trailed by 20 points.

In the second half, the Scarlet Raiders outscored the Scarlet Raptors 30-23 but that seven-point difference wasn't enough to close the gap. Rutgers-Newark's defense stepped up in the second half and held the Scarlet Raptors to 39% shooting from the floor after they found the bottom of the net at a 55% clip in the first. Rafeeq Reid cut the lead down to 14 at the 15:56 mark but the Scarlet Raiders couldn't build off of that momentum as the Scarlet Raptors extended their lead to hold onto the NJAC win.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Wednesday, January 31 when they host Stockton University at 8:00 p.m.
