Dodard's Late-Game Heroics Lift Men's Basketball Past Stockton, 66-64

NEWARK, NJ | Pascal Dodard played the role of hero for the Scarlet Raiders this evening as he lifted the Scarlet Raiders past Stockton with a last second fast break layup to knock down the Osprey's 66-64 at The Golden Dome on Wednesday evening.

Rutgers-Newark (11-10, 7-7) forced 25 turnovers and tallied 32 rebounds in the win. Dodard tallied a career-high 16 points in the win while Russell Ayala added 14 points. Kelvin Marshall cleaned the boards to the tune of eight rebounds. Stockton (13-8, 9-5) was led by EJ Matthews-Spratley who scored a game-high 23 points while Tayvon Gaither added 15.

Rutgers-Newark led wire-to-wire in the first half after Russell Ayala opened the game with a long-range three-point basket. By the halfway point, the Scarlet Raiders had extended its lead to eight, 15-7, behind a free throw from Pascal Dodard. Stockton tried to close the gap in the following minutes, however, they were stifled which allowed the Scarlet Raiders to bump its lead to 9 behind a Levi Holton layup. That lead would not remain intact as the Ospreys chipped away at it until they trailed by two with 1:36 to go. Holton would cash in on a pull-up jumper to take a four-point lead into halftime.

Stockton picked up where they left off towards the end of the first in the second half, quickly leapfrogging Rutgers-Newark to take the lead. Once the Osprey's took the lead, the held the Scarlet Raiders at arms length until the 3:43 mark. Holton would go 1-for-2 for the line before Marshall cashed a pair to bring Rutgers-Newark within five. As time ticked away, the Scarlet Raiders defense picked up and forced six turnovers over the last three minutes. With 1:43 remaining in the game, Stockton led by seven until Dodard made it a four point game with a corner three. Shy'Heed Jenkins-Floyd cut it to two before Ayden Brown knotted it up at 64 with 24 ticks to go. Dodard would go on to intercept a pass in the corner and go the full length of the court for a game-winning layup to complete the comeback and keep the Scarlet Raiders in the NJAC Playoff hunt.
