Slow Start Stunts Women's Basketball Against Kean

UNION, NJ | Raihanna Abdus-Salaam tallied a career-high 15 points in the 84-61 loss to Kean University on Saturday afternoon.

Rutgers-Newark (2-16, 1-10) had a trio of scorers tally double-digits with Samiyah Horton leading the way with 16 points. Ebony Odom Barnes added 11 points while Aliyah Sanchez grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds. Kean (12-6, 9-2) was led by Gigi Gamble's 22 points and Brittany Graff's 20.

The Scarlet Raiders got off to a slow start, tallying just six points in the opening quarter of play. Kean, on the other hand, recorded its highest mark of the game with 25 points, giving them a cushion for the remainder of the game. Rutgers-Newark bounced back in the second and tallied 20 points and even cut the lead down to 14 behind Renee Houston-Allen's layup. Kean would extend its lead to 20 before the break.

Rutgers-Newark kept the momentum going in the third, however, Kean matched the Scarlet Raiders' output, preventing any comeback attempt. In the fourth, Rutgers-Newark tallied 16 points but were not able to stop Kean's high-powered offense.

The women's basketball team returns to The Golden Dome on Wednesday, January 24 where they will host Montclair State University at 6:00 p.m.
