Second Half Outburst Lifts Men's Basketball Past NJCU, 70-63

NEWARK, NJ | A 43-point second-half outburst lifted the Scarlet Raiders past New Jersey City University, 70-63 at The Golden Dome on Saturday evening.

Rutgers-Newark (7-7, 3-4) was led by Levi Holton's 17 points and six rebounds. Russell Ayala added 14 points and a team-high four assists. For NJCU (4-10, 1-6) Jaheim Lewis led the way with 16 points and 9 rebounds.

Pascal Dodard put Rutgers-Newark ahead 11-6 early in the first half behind a mid-range jumper. NJCU would eventually knot the game up at 23 before taking the lead, 25-23. The Scarlet Raiders, behind the offensive catalyst Russell Ayala, remained competitive and took a three-point deficit into the break.

Ayala picked up where he left off in the first half and found the nylon with a pull-up jumper to bring the Scarlet Raiders within one. Kelvin Marshall and Levi Holton boosted the team offensively during the 14-4 run to put them ahead by seven. The stout defense began to pay dividends for the Scarlet Raiders as they started to score off of the turnovers they were creating. NJCU, however, refused to go away quietly as they continued to chip at the lead until they were within four. NJCU threatened down the stretch with chances from the charity stripe but Rutgers-Newark responded on the other end to secure the crucial NJAC win.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Wednesday, January 10 when they host TCNJ at 3:00 pm.
