Stout Defense Lifts Rutgers-Newark Past TCNJ, 71-63

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's basketball squad suffered a New Jersey Athletic Conference loss, 89-49, to The College of New Jersey on Thursday afternoon at The Golden Dome.

Rutgers-Newark (2-13, 1-7) was led by Samiyah Horton's 18 points and seven rebounds while Ebony Odom Barnes added 11 points in the loss. TCNJ (9-6, 6-2) was led by Julia Setaro who scored 21 points while Grace Kowalski tallied a 10-point, 10 rebound double-double.

Aliyah Sanchez ended the 11-0 run by the Lions with seven minutes to go in the first quarter with a quality post move in the paint. The Scarlet Raiders found their offense and edged out the Lions 6-5 in the waning moments of the quarter to head into the second stanza down 26-10.

In the second quarter, The College of New Jersey went on a 13-2 run to further extend its lead over the Scarlet Raiders. Rutgers-Newark's offense fell cold in the second as just two field goals were made by Renee Houston-Allen and Samiyah Horton. The Lions dominated the boards in the first half, tallying 31 to just 12 for the Scarlet Raiders.

Out of the break, the Scarlet Raiders went stride for stride with the Lions matching them with 17 points. Rutgers-Newark's success was found in the paint where they converted layups and were sent to the charity stripe where they went 7-for-9.

Rutgers-Newark continued rolling with its offense, netting 15 points in the fourth, however, TCNJ exploded for a game-high 29 points to keep the Scarlet Raiders at bay and secure the NJAC win.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Saturday, January 13 when they head down south to take on Rowan at 1:00 p.m.
