Women’s Volleyball Falls in Five to Rutgers-Camden

CAMDEN, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders (6-10) suffer another close conference loss as Rutgers-Camden (5-11) comes from behind to take the match, 3-2 (25-19, 15-25, 16-25, 25-19, 15-10).

The Scarlet Raptors were in control of the match to start. They went up 11-6 in set one, and maintained that lead until the end. Newark put together a run late in the set fueled by the service of Angelyse Orellana, but it was not enough to overcome their opponents.

In set number two, the script was flipped. The Scarlet Raiders edged out in front and established a healthy seven point advantage. Bella Foster and Maryann Ijeh were putting on a show in the middle of the court - they collected an incredible 33 combined kills this match.

The visitors' momentum continued into the next set. After losing the first point, they did not trail for a single point afterwards. The Scarlet Raptors made it a competition, and towards the latter end of the set the score was 19-15. This is when Bella Foster decided to take over. Her three kills energized a five point run, and from there the Scarlet Raiders secured a 2-1 set lead.

But there was much more to the story of this game. The fourth set was neck and neck until Camden jumped ahead by five, setting the score at 15-10. Newark tried their best to claw at the deficit, but Camden was able to send the game to a fifth a final set.

The Scarlet Raiders jumped out to a commanding 7-3 lead in the race to 15. Tracey Ilderis was the driving factor - she ended the match one kill short of a double-double, with eleven digs. However, it wasn't to be for Rutgers-Newark. The home team rattled off ten points in eleven, and easily secured the W from there. Another heartbreaking defeat in a tough start to the conference campaign.

Women's volleyball is back in action on Thursday, October 3rd, with another NJAC matchup against Stockton at 7:00 pm in the Golden Dome.
