Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Bested by Montclair State

NEWARK, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders (7-5-2) struggled to hold up against a nationally ranked opponent in Montclair State (10-2-1). Final Score: 4-1.

The beginning of the match was exciting, with plenty of back and forth. Montclair State launched several through balls over the top, while Rutgers-Newark employed a more varied attack. Neither goalkeeper was tested convincingly - Pedro Flores had one simple save off a corner, but aside from that he had an uneventful first 20 minutes.

The first big chance came in the 25th minute, when the ball fell fortuitously to Salem Ellisy. Pedro Flores recognized the opening early, and came out to smother the shot.

In the final stages of the first half, the Red Hawks exploded. With five minutes left, Chris Fontanazza finished from a cutback pass to put the visitors ahead. Then, three minutes later, Jake Winchock carried the ball into the box and finished above a sprawling Flores to double the lead. Just like that, the Red Hawks strode into halftime with a 2-0 advantage.

The break did not interrupt Montclair State's momentum. Four minutes into the second half, Salem Ellisy poked home an easy finish from close range. The defending NJAC champions were showing why they're nationally ranked, and they were not done there. In minute 62, they pounced on a mistake in the midfield and Logan Neno finished into the bottom-left corner to make it four.

The Scarlet Raiders did show some signs of attacking play. Erick Cortes and Martin Pulgarin both fired off threatening shots from long range. In the 83rd minute, Marco Menacho managed to net a consolation goal. But in the end, Montclair State was too much to handle, and they took all the points.

Men's soccer will next play in the Adrian Velazquez Memorial Game on Wednesday, October 16th. They'll host Kean University at 7:00 pm right here on Frederick Douglass Field.
