READING, PA - The Rutgers-Newark (11-15) women's volleyball team split its Saturday action this afternoon on the road. The Raiders fell to Alvernia University (10-12) in four sets, before defeating Brooklyn College (12-10) in its second match in four.
Alvernia University 3, Rutgers-Newark 1 (14-25, 25-23, 14-25, 24-26)
Alvernia held an early advantage in the first set, before a Tracey Ilderis killed tied the set at 6-6. The Raiders would trail the rest of the set as Alvernia capitalized on service aces and Raider attack errors to pick up the first set victory at 25-14.
Set two belonged to the Raiders. After a rough start, Jaedyn Simba-Malasarte found an opening in the Alvernia side of the night to record a kill and make it a 5-5 tie. The set went back-and-forth until Rutgers-Newark scored four straight points to make it 21-20. The Raiders trailed by one 22-23, then switched gears, rattled off a trio of kills and Bella Foster closed out the set for the Raiders with back-to-back kills.
The third set was almost identical to the first set, leaving the Raiders unhappy with the outcome. Turning the page, Rutgers-Newark entered the fourth set ready to make a change. After a few miscues, the Raiders tied it at 6-6. The set would stay very close between both teams and even went the extra mile. The scoreboard read 23-23, the Raiders made it 24-23, and then Alvernia scored three straight points to steal the set and the win.
Maryann Ijeh led Rutgers-Newark with 10 kills and three blocks, while Bella Foster had eight kills and a pair of blocks. Nicole Sullivan collected 12 digs and Orellana Angelyse had 10.

Rutgers-Newark 3, Brooklyn College 1 (25-20, 19-25, 25-18, 25-18)
Rutgers-Newark began the match on a 3-0 run. With a few ups and downs like a roller coaster, the Raiders took an 11-10 advantage off a Bulldog attack error. From there, the lead never slipped and Rutgers-Newark controlled the match nicely and a Tracey Ilderis kill put the icing on the cake and an end to the set (25-20).
The Raiders scored the first point of the second set, but that would be their only lead. The Bulldogs managed to compose themselves and put together a set that saw them gather a 25-19 set two victory.
Done with giving the Bulldogs faith, Raiders won sets three and four by identical scores of 25-18. It was a great comeback for Rutgers-Newark as they picked up the non-conference victory.
Jaedyn Simba-Malasarte led the Raiders with 14 kills, 14 digs and a pair of aces. Maryann Ijeh tallied 10 kills and three blocks. Tracey Ilderis also chipped in 10 kills. Shayla Moody had four aces.
