Men’s Soccer Picks Up Huge Win at William Paterson

WAYNE, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders (7-4-2) collected their first conference win against a strong Pioneers (7-2-3) squad to continue their strong 2024 campaign.

Rutgers-Newark was dominant from the start. Martin Pulgarin ripped a shot in the 12th minute, forcing a save from William Paterson goalkeeper Luca Misko. However, the Pioneers were quick to respond. They put up the next two shots, but neither were on target.

The Scarlet Raiders had the majority of the play - they outshot their opponents 17-3. But they couldn't find a breakthrough in the first half. Despite having five corner kicks in the opening 45, only one resulted in an attempt towards the net.

The second half, however, was a different story. The corner kicks continued, and in the 66th minute, Rutgers-Newark finally got their goal. Darius Holmes had the finish, and less than a minute later the hosts were issued a red card. Things were looking up for the Scarlet Raiders!

Then, in minute 78, Erick Cortes found Nick Sousa to double the visitors' lead. From there, it was smooth sailing for Rutgers-Newark, who only allowed one shot after gaining a man advantage.

Men's Soccer collects their first conference win of the season, while handing the Pioneers their second conference loss.

The Scarlet Raiders go again on Saturday, October 12th when they host Montclair State at 6:00 pm right here on Frederick Douglass Field.
