Volleyball Posts Thrilling Pair of Tri-Match Victories

HUDSON VALLEY, NY - The Rutgers-Newark women's volleyball team (8-11) captured a pair of wins Saturday night, making a successful trip across the bridge at the Stevenson Athletic Center. The Raiders captured a five-set win against St. Lawrence University, followed by a crazy three-set victory over Bard College.

Match 1: Rutgers Newark 3, St. Lawrence University 2 (25-23, 25-23, 17-25, 21-25, 15-10)
Rutgers-Newark completed the five-set win over St. Lawrence University (3-13) to earn the win in its first match of the day. The first-two sets belonged to Rutgers-Newark, as they controlled the match to pick up identical 25-23 wins in sets one and two.

St. Lawrence bounced back and shifted the air in the gym with a pair of sets going in its favor to make it a five-set match.

The Raiders decided to turn on the pressure and facing a 10-10 scoreboard, Rutgers-Newark rattled off five straight points to close out the match. Tracey Illderis delivered the final dagger to get the Raider bench jumping in the air in excitement.

Maryann Ijeh led the team with 13 kills, five block assists, and one solo block. Bella Foster added 12 kills, three digs, two blocks, and one block assists. Angelyse Orellana tallied 21 assists and three digs.

Match 2: Rutgers-Newark 3, Bard College 0 (25-23, 25-23, 32-30)
Looking to earn its second win of the day, Rutgers-Newark never gave up, despite trailing by as many as four points in the first set at 21-17 due to Bard (3-13) capitalizing on a Raider service error. The Raiders inched their way back and after being down 23-22, Rutgers-Newark scored on a service error and attack error, before Angelyse Orellana closed out set one with a kill for the 25-23 victory.

Set two saw the Raiders jump out to a whopping 7-0 lead to start the second. Bard closed it to within two points midway through the set at 16-14. That would be as close as they'd get as the Raiders upped their game to another level despite Bard closing the gap to one multiple times down the stretch. It was a kill by Bella Foster that ended Bard's hopes of a second set comeback, as the visitors went into the final set up 2-0. The third set was one for the ages and a thrilling one indeed.

The Raiders took the Raptors to the edge and then pushed them past their limit. Rutgers-Newark was down 30-29 and looking for any sign of momentum to close out the set and match. Jaedyn Simba-Malasarte found an opening and slammed it down for the kill and point. Tracey Ilderis mustered up the efficiency to collect back-to-back kills for the Raiders as they came at the right time to stun the home team and capture the thrilling three-set victory.

Foster led the Raiders with 11 kills, a pair of aces, four digs and three block assists. Maryann Ijeh added 10 kills and a trio of block assists. Orellana tallied 30 assists and 12 digs.
