Women’s Volleyball Picks Up First Conference Win Over Ramapo

NEWARK, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders (9-11) came just short of a clean sheet, looking dominant against a resilient Ramapo (2-11) squad. Final score: 3-1 (25-13, 25-18, 17-25, 25-18).

Rutgers-Newark didn't have any trouble at the outset. They took a 13-4 lead and never looked back, sealing a feelgood start to the match. Maryann Ijeh was on fire - she led the Scarlet Raiders in this match with 12 kills.

Ramapo began to wake up in the second set, but the home team was still too hot to handle. An 8-1 run early on provided a five point advantage, and the Roadrunners just couldn't recover. Bella Foster found her feet, and was dominating alongside Ijeh. Elvin Karakaya had herself a day as well, just one dig away from a whopping 20! After two sets, it looked like this match was a breeze.

But the Roadrunners had something to say before the end. They came out firing in set number three, bringing the energy and forcing mistakes. The Scarlet Raiders brought it back within one at 11-12, but the visitors jumped right back out. All of the sudden, the set score sat at 2-1.

But things soon calmed back down, and Rutgers-Newark regained control. Jaedyn Simba-Malasarte played her part as usual, ending the night with 11 kills and 9 digs. Ramapo stuck around, but the Scarlet Raiders kept putting together three and four point runs to close out the match.

Women's volleyball will try for four straight wins next Tuesday, October 15th, when they travel to Union, NJ to take on Kean at 7:00 pm.
