Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Tops Alvernia En Route to ECAC Championship Game

NEWARK, NJ | With two penalty kick goals, Rutgers-Newark held off Alvernia to secure a 2-1 victory.

The game began timidly, as each team was feeling out the game with caution. Both sides had opportunities to swing the ball into the box from freekicks, but neither were threatening.

The first action came when Matt Teixeira let a shot fly from distance in the 10th minute. From about 35 yards out, the ball knuckled and nearly found the net, but Golden Wolves goalkeeper Evan Solley managed to tip it onto the crossbar and over.

In minute 22, Edgar Silva was taken down in the box, and the Scarlet Raiders were given a penalty. He stepped up to the spot and placed the ball in the top-right corner to give his team the lead.

However, that lead would not stand for very long. Ryan Cogill made a winding run into the box and was fouled, handing Alvernia a penalty of their own. Cogill equalized with a finish down the center of the goal, and honors were once again even.

Conceding the leveling goal seemed to awaken the hosts, who ramped up their attack in the final 10 minutes of the half. They managed two corners and a shot, but the score stood at 1-1 going into halftime.

The second 45 began similarly to the first, until the 56th minute when Esteban Hidalgo was fouled by Solley on a breakaway, and the Scarlet Raiders had their second penalty of the game. Silva took the responsibility once more, and this time his initial effort was saved. Luckily, the rebound came right back to him and he tapped in to re-establish Rutgers-Newark's advantage.

Alvernia was hungry to get back on level terms once more. Striker Ryan Cogill had two decent efforts thwarted, one by Pedro Flores and another by Jeremy Hernandez. The Golden Wolves kept going at it but nothing was going in for them. Connor Kraycik fired a shot toward the top corner, but it was deflected before it hit the net.

And that is how the game would finish. The Scarlet Raiders kept their opponents out and took home the win without their top scorer or their starting center back in Erick Cortes and Bryan Rodriguez. An incredibly gutsy performance and one befitting of a team headed to a championship game!

Men's soccer will play in the ECAC Championship final this Saturday, November 23rd. They will face off against Juniata away from home, time TBA.
