Women’s Hoops Runs Past Cairn, 63-33

NEWARK, NJ - The Rutgers-Newark women's basketball team took on Cairn University this afternoon at The Golden Dome, coming away with a dominant 63-33 victory over the Highlanders at home in the John K. Adams Tip-Off Classic.

The victory is the second straight for Rutgers-Newark (2-3) as they are undefeated at home in Brick City.

The game was close in the first half with the Raiders holding a three-point lead after the first-10 minutes. Arlenny Medina tallied four of the 11 points with a layup and two made free throws to close out the quarter.

The second quarter saw a surge in offensive output for Rutgers-Newark as they outscored the Highlanders, 27-12 to take a 38-20 halftime lead. Tracey Ilderis came alive in the second quarter scoring eight points for the Raiders creating an inside presence too big for the Highlanders to control.

Coming out of the break, Cairn connected on a made free throw and a layup, but the Raiders went on an 8-2 run clipping any momentum the Highlanders thought they were about to achieve.

The Highlanders simply ran out of gas as they squealed out just four points in the final quarter. The Raiders received 36 points from their bench and scored 28 points in the paint to secure the 30-point win.

Medina was the Raiders' top point scorer with 12 points on 5 of 11 shooting. She also added six rebounds, six steals, and five assists. Sanaa Brodie added 10 points. Ilderis was just short of a double-double with eight points and 12 rebounds.

Kailee Sobrino led the Highlanders with 13 points. Dezaray Bright registered eight points and nine rebounds. Cairn shot 23.3 percent from the floor.
