Women’s Volleyball Sweep Final Tri-Match of the Season on Senior Day

NEWARK, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders collected two strong wins over Medgar Evers and King's College on senior day, both 3-0 straight set wins, bringing positive vibes to the final home games of the season.

Match 1: Rutgers-Newark 3, Medgar Evers 0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-10)

After the senior day celebrations, the Scarlet Raiders cruised past their first opponent of the day. In set number one, it was all about the serving. Arisa Khalaj, Angelyse Orellana, and Brianna Rojas all found the floor from behind the line to power the home team to a first set victory.

Medgar Evers came out strong in set number two, leading by a score of 8-7 in the beginning stages. However, the Scarlet Raiders found their form and blew it all up, putting up an 18-7 scoreline for the rest of the set to go up 2-0.

Set three was a continuation of the host's momentum. Rutgers-Newark rolled over their opposition to complete a dominant victory. Medgar Evers struggled to put up points, as the service aces continued to rain down upon them. By the end of the game, the Scarlet Raiders had amassed a whopping 25 aces! Brianna Rojas led the team with nine. Needless to say, it was a great way to celebrate our seniors!

Match 2: Rutgers-Newark 3, King's College 0 (25-20, 25-23, 26-24)

The first set of match two was a hard fought competition. The score was even until mid set when the Monarchs established a slim two point lead. They nursed their lead until the Scarlet Raiders came back and evened things up at 18. From there, it was all Angelyse Orellana. She put up FOUR aces in a row to give her team some breathing room, and Rutgers-Newark was able to finish the job from there.

Set number two was also hotly contested. Once again it was King's College on top early, although Rutgers-Newark trailed closely behind. Then, in the blink of an eye, the Scarlet Raiders went on a nine point run to flip the score and go ahead 15-10. The Monarchs fought back hard, tying the game at 19, and from there it was anybody's set to take. In the end, the home team just barely edged out their opponent to take the 2-0 set lead.

The intensity only increased from there. In the third set, the Scarlet Raiders went up 10-6. King's College worked to stay in the game, and the set went all the way down to the wire. The score was tied at 17, 18, 23, and 24. Rutgers-Newark, led by Bella Foster's 13 kills, just barely secured the straight set win. It was an exhilarating performance, and a great way to end the 2024 home campaign.
