Men’s Basketball Breezes Past FDU-Florham and Improves to 3-1

NEWARK, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders (3-1) showed out at home, and sent the Devils (2-3) packing with a 73-59 victory.

It was a slow start for the home team. FDU-Florham took it to them early, taking an 8-2 lead in the first two minutes. However, Rutgers-Newark built their way back and took over with a 14-13 scoreline with 11:26 remaining in the first half.

From there, the Scarlet Raiders slowly expanded their advantage. The Devils kept pace, but a pair of Levi Holton free throws established an eight point gap with just under three minutes until halftime. Pascal Dodard tipped a rebound to leave the score at 34-22 after the first 20 minutes. Dodard was hot—he ended the half with 13 points en route to a career-high 18 point effort.

Rutgers-Newark picked up right where they left off in the second half. A Travis Miles spin move to get to the rim and a Dodard coast-to-coast drive gave the hosts a 17 point cushion with 15 minutes to go.

But the Devils weren't ready to let go of the game just yet. They began to up their scoring, with a three-pointer from Ethan Klueh cutting the difference back down to eight. However, the Scarlet Raiders were unrelenting. Every time their opponents started to get up, they knocked them right back down. Shy'Heed Jenkins-Floyd hit a pair of free throws with 7:28 remaining and the lead was back to 12.

FDU-Florham stayed in the fight until late, but Levi Holton kept coming up with big points down the stretch. He finished the game with 23 points, 16 of them coming in the second half. In addition, the Scarlet Raiders shot 7-8 from the free throw line in the final 90 seconds to put the nail in the coffin.

In the end, it was a comfortable win by 14 points for men's basketball, who continue their strong start to their 2024-25 campaign.

Rutgers-Newark will hit the court again this Saturday, November 23rd at 2:00pm. They will head to Kings Point, NY to take on the United States Merchant Marine Academy.
