PATERSON, NJ - The Rutgers-Newark women's basketball team traveled to Willima Paterson for a Wednesday night showdown. The Raiders fought hard but were unable to capture the road win, falling 77-41.
William Paterson scored first with a layup six seconds in, but then the Raiders went on a 7-0 run with Tracey Ilderis accounting for four of the seven points. It got under William Paterson's skin so much that the Bears rattled off 11 consecutive points to take a 13-7 lead with under two minutes remaining in the first quarter. The Raiders tacked on four free throws to go into the second quarter down, 19-12.
The point totals for the second quarter were identical to the first, as William Paterson scored 19 points and Rutgers-Newark recorded 12 points.
At the break, seven different Raiders had scored with Zoe Francis-Bunkley scoring four of her five points at the charity stripe. Sanaa Brodie was a perfect 2-for-2 from the floor and 1-for-1 at the free throw line to register five points under her name.
Coming out of halftime, William Paterson went on a 12-2 run to extend its lead over Rutgers-Newark to 50-26 with all 12 points being scored in the paint. The Raiders were able to stop the Bears from going on any more scoring sprees, as it did all it could to climb back in the game.
The offensive struggles continued to hurt Rutgers-Newark, as it was held to just six points in the final quarter.
Rutgers-Newark (3-7, 0-4 NJAC) was led in scoring by Brodie who finished 5-for-9 from the floor for 12 points. The Raiders shot 30 percent from the floor as a team.
William Paterson (5-3, 3- 1 NJAC) had four players finish with 12 points apiece. As a team the Bears finished 80.8 percent from the free throw line making 21 of 26 attempts.
The Raiders return home to The Golden Dome on Saturday, Dec. 14 for game one of the Rutgers-Newark doubleheader versus Stockton. The game is set for a 4 p.m. tip off with the men to follow at 6 p.m.
