Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Scarlet Raiders Comeback Attempt is Not Enough to Top the Ospreys

NEWARK, NJ | Despite turning a 16 point lead into a single possession difference, Rutgers-Newark (4-7) could not quite put themselves on top as Stockton (8-1) came away with a 63-60 victory.

The Scarlet Raiders started hot. Eli Camacho hit a three-pointer just over three minutes into the game to set the score at 7-1. The Ospreys would soon get off the ground, and with 13:37 on the clock in the first half they were within one point at 9-8.

The visitors took their first lead two minutes later when Eriq Campbell drove to the rim to make it 12-11. Stockton continued to score, going up 18-11 with a pair of free throws from Campbell halfway through the first period.

The visitors continued to hold a substantial lead. With just under five minutes left before the half, Martin Anguelov nailed a triple to give them their first double-digit edge of the evening.

Rutgers-Newark showed some fight, and David Kema was leading the way. He fed two assists to Travis Miles to keep the Scarlet Raiders within striking distance. At the break, the Ospreys held a seven point advantage with a scoreline of 36-29.

Stockton picked up the pace in the second half. They quickly racked up the points to re-establish their double-digit advantage. With 16 minutes on the clock, Anguelov sank another three to put the Ospreys up 48-33.

The Scarlet Raiders struggled to get back into the game. The visitors held their lead until there were seven minutes left, when Essam Assaf provided a pair of fine finishes to bring the lead below ten points for the first time in over 11 minutes. Then Pascal Dodard got the crowd on their feet with two impressive buckets of his own. In the blink of an eye, the gap had shrunk to just three points with 5:17 on the clock.

Stockton held firm and did not let their lead completely slip. They managed to hold off the charging Scarlet Raiders just enough. The home team got a chance right at the end, but Assaf's shot was just off the mark. In the end, the Ospreys came out on top by a slim three point margin.

Men's basketball will attempt to avoid a winless December on the final day of the year. They will head to Hackettstown, NJ to take on Centenary on Tuesday, December 31st at 1:00 PM.
