Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Ends the Year With a Victory Over Centenary

HACKETTSTOWN, NJ | In the last athletic competition for Rutgers-Newark in 2024, the Scarlet Raiders (5-7) stopped their five game skid by taking down the Cyclones (6-7) by a score of 73-66.

Rutgers-Newark jumped ahead early. Essam Assaf laid in a fast break bucket to put the visitors up 6-0 two and a half minutes into the game. Centenary would eventually get going, but they consistently trailed. The lead dwindled to a single point with 11:19 remaining in the half thanks to a jumper from Kenneth Rankin.

However, the Scarlet Raiders did not relinquish their advantage. Instead, they found another gear. Eli Camacho's three-pointer at 8:26 gave them their first double-digit lead of the game. Pascal Dodard and Levi Holton ensured that their lead remained substantial, and Rutgers-Newark went into the break on top by 12 points.

Centenary came out firing in the second half, coming within three points after a Devin Strickland layup in transition. Camacho hit another triple to stop the bleeding, and Holton continued to score. The senior led his team once again, ending the afternoon with 17 points along with 11 rebounds.

The Scarlet Raiders were able to cruise to victory for the remainder of the game. Centenary was unable to shrink the gap to less than five points in the final 15 minutes. Michael Salvatore made it six with 1:17 on the clock, but Levi Holton responded, putting the victory out of reach for the hosts.

Men's basketball will begin the new year by resuming conference play on January 8th. They will head to Mahwah, NJ to face Ramapo College at 7:30 PM.
